Mastitis

Healthy Livestock aims to reduce the incidence of mastitis in dairy herds across the south west, through the use of DairyCo Mastitis Control Plan (DCMCP).  It is delivered to farmers by a trained registered plan user from across the region to create a control plan specific to individual farm requirements.

How you access this service:

  • By requesting a visit from a registered plan user, this could be your vet or a consultant or
  • Contact the Healthy Livestock team who will put you in touch with a registered plan user in your region.

The Process

It is encouraged that you include all your farm staff that are involved with your dairy routine to be involved with the control plan process.

Mastitis 1 (On farm session)

You will be taken through the DairyCo Mastitis Control Plan with your vet or consultant; this will include:

  • Completion of the DCMCP questionnaire
  • Assessment of environment, including housing and grazing areas
  • Evaluation of milking routine and operation of milking machine equipment
  • Review of dry cow management
  • Analysis of cell count data and mastitis records.

Mastitis 2 (On farm session)

Your vet/consultant will take you through the results of their findings from the first visit for Mastitis 1.  From the results you can then work with your vet/consultant to put together a plan of action to help reduce the incidence of Mastitis.

Mastitis 3 (On farm session)

Your vet/consultant will visit you on farm to review the control plan that was put together, review mastitis data and suggest any further changes that can be implemented.
